On-Site Welding and Repairs FAQ

Our customers contact us weekly either by using the contact form above, or by sending us an email, or by calling us directly. Here below is a list of the most frequently asked questions. For a more extensive list, check our big beautiful FAQ page.

What is on-site welding?

On-site welding is a professional welding service performed directly at the client’s location, rather than in a workshop or fabrication facility. This is especially valuable when components are too large, too heavy, or too structurally integrated to be transported elsewhere — such as structural steel, industrial machinery, loading docks, pipework, and fencing.

There are four main welding positions: Flat (1G/1F), Horizontal (2G/2F), Vertical (3G/3F), and Overhead (4G/4F). These positions determine how the welder positions themselves relative to the joint and dictate the technique, parameters, and gravity challenges involved. Pipe welding adds specialized positions, specifically 5G and 6G.

Key Welding Positions

  • Flat (1G or 1F): The easiest position, where the workpiece lies flat and the welder operates from above (downhand).
  • Horizontal (2G or 2F): The weld axis runs horizontally, often requiring adjustments to heat and speed to prevent sag.
  • Vertical (3G or 3F): The weld runs vertically, with techniques for either uphill (higher penetration) or downhill.
  • Overhead (4G or 4F): The most challenging position, located under a joint, which requires managing gravity to prevent molten metal from dripping.

Pipe Welding Positions

  • 5G: Horizontal pipe fixed with a vertical weld that progresses around the pipe.
  • 6G: Pipe is fixed at a 45-degree angle, requiring the highest skill level.

Positions are categorized by “G” for groove welds and “F” for fillet welds.

On-site welding is critical across a broad range of sectors. At Metal KLS, we serve the following sectors:

  • Construction — structural steel repairs, beam installations, scaffolding fixes

  • Industrial & Manufacturing — machinery repairs, conveyor systems, pressure vessels

  • Agriculture — farm equipment, trailers, gates, and ramps

  • Municipal & Infrastructure — bridges, pipework, railings, water treatment facilities

  • Commercial — loading docks, fences, custom metalwork
